Harold V. Moore

Harold Vincent Moore, age 100, passed away at 6:11pm November 27, 2023 at his home on the family farm near Highland in Clinton County. He was born September 27, 1923, on the family farm the son of Merritt Elmer and Fanny Jane (Stowe) Moore.

He married Barbara Peterson, daughter of Herbert Manley and Ethel Lucille (McKenzie) Peterson on February 25, 1945. After almost 71 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on January 5, 2016.

Harold is survived by his children Jeanne Anne Moore and Ellen (Tom) Reese; grandchildren Eric (Julie) Reese, Christi (Scott) Agulnek and Julia (Gary) Meade; great grandchildren Mackenzie and Kimberly Reese, Addison Clay, Eli and Elin Meade; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his daughter Connie Thomas, his twin brother Howard Vernon Moore, and four sisters Margaret Marshal, Kathleen Eckler, Alice Moore and Helen Moore.

Harold graduated from Wayne High School (now East Clinton) in 1941 and took classes at Wilmington College.

A dedicated farmer, Harold began farming as a teenager and farmed for over 70 years until he was 85, at which time, he was farming 350 acres. He farmed both his father's and his mother's family farms which have been in the families since 1810.

Harold was an active member of Fairview Friends Meeting for 75 years, serving on practically all church committees such as Ministry and Council, Presiding Clerk of Monthly Meeting, Trustee Committee, Finance Committee and others.

He was a Republican Central Committeeman and a Republican Presiding Judge for Wayne township on election day for many years. He was a 4-H leader with his wife.

Harold had many interests and hobbies. He was an avid reader-one would often see a paperback book in his back pocket. One of his favorite interests was hunting, ever since he shot his first squirrel at age 9. At a time when there were too many foxes in the county, he would often get a call from a neighbor to kill a fox getting into the chicken house. One winter his picture was in the Cincinnati paper showing all the foxes he had shot that year. He also enjoyed going to Pennsylvania to hunt deer. Later he took up trapshooting.  Harold enjoyed sports--tennis, golf, softball, boating, fishing, and croquet but probably the one he enjoyed the most was table tennis. He competed weekly in Dayton.

Harold was an expert woodworker. Making not only small items but also large pieces of furniture using cherry, walnut and oak from his farms. Family and friends were always pleased when they would receive one of his unique items as a gift. He was a member of the Clinton Woodworking Club.

He was an award-winning photographer and also made leatherwork items with handmade carved designs. He built and flew radio-controlled planes and was a member of Clinton Model Aviators.

He always enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the farm and the outdoors and his interests in sports and hobbies with his children and grandchildren and helped them develop skills in these areas.

Family will receive friends on Friday, Dec. 8 from 1:00-2:00, when a funeral service presided by Patricia Thomas will begin at Fairview Friends Meeting, 6796 Antioch Rd., New Vienna.  The burial will follow at the Highland Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of Littleton Funeral Home.
