Ruth E. (Starbuck) Stuckey

Ruth E. Starbuck Stuckey, age 95, of Wilmington, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Cape May.

Born March 2, 1927, in Salem, Ohio, she was the daughter of Jesse R. and Clara Bedell Starbuck.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Roy Joe Stuckey, in 2014.

A graduate of Wilmington College, she had a lifelong relationship with the Friends Community.  Besides her greatest role as a mother and homemaker, Ruth was the surrogate mother of an early generation of "Aggies" at Wilmington College.  Ruth had served in many capacities alongside her husband.  She was a founding member of Campus Friends Meeting and was a graduate and longtime supporter of Olney Friends School.  At Olney, she was an avid hiker & loved playing field hockey. Ruth's deep love of family and friends always led her to organizing and hosting dinners and events, and her love and consideration of people was included in remembering birthdays with gifts to the residents of Cape May.  She took hospitality to a new level.

Ruth is survived by her children: Mary Elizabeth (Elias) Newswanger of Costa Rica, Rebecca Ruth Howarth of Cedarville, Joseph David (Jean Ann) Stuckey of Costa Rica, and John Llewellyn (Anne) Stuckey of Cumberland, Maryland.  Also left to cherish her memory are 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and her sister, Dorothy Smith of Hudson, Ohio.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by siblings, Anna Mae Moffitt and Elizabeth Osborn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Olney Friends School, 61830 Sandy Ridge Rd., Barnesville, OH 43713 or to Wilmington College at 1870 Quaker Way, Pyle Box 1307, Wilmington, OH 45177. The memo line should read ‘In memory of Ruth Stuckey’. 

A memorial service, honoring Ruth's life, will be held at T. Canby Jones Meeting House on the Wilmington College Campus at 2 PM on Sunday, June 26, 2022.
